Chapter I: The Discovery

2009

The installation “Chapter I: The Discovery” consists of a sculpture representing an unidentified object in the shape of a dodecahedron and a number of videos restaging the moment of its discovery.

This installation questions the viewer’s perception about the truthfulness of what is shown, outlining a journey from the initial visioning of a series of videos with synthetic images and ending up in an encounter with a physical interactive object which co-opts information flows, sound and light transmission. A journey of discovery is predicated on this route drawn between the two rooms and the two media of representation, the animated image and the plastic image.

Accordingly, the installation renews an age-old cultural groundbase, questioning the limits of our notions of artificial intelligence and cutting across our collective imaginary of science fiction.

“The aesthetic import of Félix Luque Sánchez’s project leverages a psychological oscillation between attraction and alienation that each of us, as late-capitalist consumers, feel in the presence of a compelling container. This is a locus of desire attending packaging that is set into an uneasy relationship with content (that which is contained). For it is not so clear that we really want to know what is inside”.
